Please see email below..... Armed Forces Day Truck Pull for Poppy Appeal

Hi Caroline,

One of my work colleagues, Dave Gargett who is the Vice-Chairman of his local branch, Hardwicke and District in Gloucester asked me if I could use my Legion connections to publicise the efforts some of the young lads at his branch went to on Armed Forces Day when they pulled a WW2 American Army Truck from Gloucester Cross to their Branch HQ in aid of the Poppy Appeal.

As everyone will recall it was a sweltering day when one of the highest temperatures in the country was recorded at Gloucester.

I believe that some of our members in Riders Branch may have attended in support of the event, however Dave has asked me if any of our members in the National Branches might consider donating a pound or two to the appeal through their Just Giving site as below.

It was a fantastic effort by all concerned and really engaged our younger members who are the future of the Legion, as we all know, so a bit of national support and recognition would be great.

I wonder if you wouldn't mind using your systems at Head Office to circulate this message around the National Branches District (and perhaps beyond), not only to see if we can get them a few more donations but also to publicise some of the good work being done by young people in the branches.

One of the lads has made a short film and posted it on YouTube. I have posted the hyperlink below so that members can see what happened and the level of support the event attracted here.

Major-General Peter Bradley, who has died aged 95, had an exceptionally varied career, serving as an Indian Army officer, a Gurkha and as an airborne commander who won a DSO at the battles of the Ardennes and the Rhine Crossing.
On March 24 1945 he took part in the airborne assault across the Rhine. The Divisional Signals suffered considerable losses and their headquarters that evening was a mixture of signals office, regimental aid post, mortuary and cowshed.
Bradley slept on a stretcher next to another recumbent figure. Not until morning did he discover that his companion was an American soldier who had died a few hours earlier. There was another dead soldier whom everyone bumped into upon opening the barn door – they would then apologise, only to feel rather foolish.
It was vital to establish wireless links rapidly between the various groups which had landed by air. Movement was hazardous, for the areas were full of enemy pockets; but Bradley moved from one small signal detachment to another, and communications withstood a most testing period. He received a DSO in recognition of his courage, leadership and initiative.

Peter Bradley died on June 2.

I have telephoned the Squadron as I did not received my copy of the news letter. They are sending me a copy. I am told it also includes details of the Colchester Event on the 24th July.
Deb's and I had a very entertaining dinner on Tuesday evening when we drove up to Hereford to join Tom Moorhouse, Wee Mac and Linda,Deanna Maddison and Rob Stanley in a local hostilery.
Other then the company the best part was Wee Mac trying to out banter Brummie Stokes. I do believe he met his match.

Caythorpe Up-Date - It appears that some have not received the Signals Association Newsletter. The returns for Caythorpe should be back to the Squadron by the 1st July so can I suggest that you download the 2009 version which is exactly the same as this years apart from the price of accommodation at Caythorpe Manor which is now £23.50 per person per night.

Good luck or I should say "Bon Voyage" to the Flankers for the trip up & down the Pyrenees - hope Alan will weigh the bergans before you start?
Also hope Bob Griff has better luck with the pretty Mesdames than he had with the young lady who tore him off a strip for climbing gates in Barnsley.
As for wee Mac, I don't believe French was on the curriculum at his "special skule" - basket-weaving & number-plates perhaps, French aural, doubtful!
Have a good, safe, journey, lads, we'll look forward to photos on your RTU.

Apologies - Guys, I must confess I have been a little slow at getting the reunion photos on the site. I have had to up-grade my computer and software and have encounter some compatibility problems with Windows 7 but nearly there.

I and the rest of the Flankers are off the Pyrenees this Sunday for 7 days to taste a bit of French life, Bob (Griffiths) tells me he is looking forward to meeting a nice RICH French women who can look after him in his fading years, for friendship only !!! I am told that Wee Mac has been brushing up his French, last spoken when he went to school in 19…. I’m sure he will get by has he always does but if anyone knows the translation for Rusty Nail please let him know.

Hopefully all of us have now received the Squadron Newsletter, dates to note are :-

70th Anniversary of the Airborne Forces on the 24th July at Merville Barracks, Colchester.

Caythorpe Reunion Weekend 3/5 September – I understand there are only 130 places available for dinner and it is suggested that returns/cheques be returned by 1st July.

Your contact at 216 is Capt Matt Wakeling on 01206 815527

I will update the website on my return from France on the 21st June.

Really sorry to hear of the sad passing of Alan De la Haye. Served with Al in the eighties when the squadron was reforming into a para role. Always remember him as a very professional airborn soldier.R.I.P Al
